World Menstral Hygiene Day 2024
In commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024, the Karis and Eleos Hand of Hope Foundation organized a transformative event under the global theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.” Held on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, at Ikeja Senior Grammar School Hall, Bolade Bus Stop, Oshodi, this impactful outreach focused on educating and empowering young girls on menstrual health, hygiene, and self-awareness.
Education, Empowerment, and Open Conversations
With 373 secondary school girls in attendance—from JSS1 to SS2—the program aimed to demystify menstruation and promote confidence and pride around menstrual health. Through interactive and age-appropriate sessions, the girls learned about:
● The menstrual cycle and puberty
● Medical conditions like endometriosis
● The importance of self-awareness and personal care
● Practical skills like menstrual cycle bead making to help track their periods
Learning from Experts
The event featured insightful facilitation by:
- Eniola, who led discussions on menstruation and puberty
- Chisomebi Uzokwe, who spoke on managing endometriosis and health challenges
- Temitope Akinrotimi, who emphasized self-awareness and confidence building
- Janet, who facilitated the creative bead-making session
Giving More Than Information
To ensure hygiene support went beyond education, menstrual pads were distributed to every girl. This crucial step reinforced the goal of access and dignity for all girls, regardless of economic status.
Creating Lasting Impact
The girls left the session not just informed but uplifted—empowered to care for their bodies, speak up, and support each other. Though the team faced challenges such as volunteer dropouts, the event’s success was evident in the engagement and joy of the participants.
Recommendations for Future Events
To increase volunteer participation in future projects, the team suggested offering certificates of service to volunteers as recognition for their time and impact.
